“And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1.5 NKJV

There are three possible ways to interpret the original language of this verse, according to the notes in my study Bible.

The Greek word in question, katalambano, is rendered in English by the translators as comprehend.

  • It can mean to seize, lay hold of, or overcome.

  • It can mean to perceive, attain, lay hold of with the mind, or to apprehend with mental or moral effort.

  • It can mean to quench, extinguish, or snuff out by stifling.

If these things are true, then the darkness cannot control the light. The darkness, being unreceptive, cannot understand the light. The darkness, being darkness, will never be able to overpower or eliminate the light.

This is good news for the fighter in you, the one who knows that there is inequity and injustice in the world but can’t quite pin it down or state precisely where it is or where it is coming from, or furthermore what to do about it. Good news: you are descended from the Original Fighter, the One who shines in the darkness.

If light shone in light, its purpose wouldn’t be very clear at all, would it? No. Light’s purpose is to punch deep into the darkness and root it out of every crack and crevice it runs to hide in, exposing its every motive, destroying its every subtlety, eradicating its every scheme and subscheme, overthrowing it utterly and forever. Darkness can’t come back from where light is sending it. There is a predestination here that cannot be unspoken. The Word is the Word. Nothing can stand against.
